Fundamentals

The importance of fundamentals

while teaching I cannot stress enough the importance of fundamentals. Certainly every coach from professional sports on down teaches these basics over and over again to their students. Without these staples we cannot function at a high level. IF you have ever played any organized sports or even seen a press conference when a team has lost or not played at a high level the coach would always stress about going back to basic.

Athletes will continue to work on fundamentals their whole life a defensive player in football who gets paid millions of dollars a year will work on tackling techniques for months at a time.

It’s the same thing here in pick-up these basics need to be internalized and re internalized. Any time I personally have a dilemma in field it is the first thing I check on and make sure I have together and usually if there is a problem that will take care of it. Just by you internalizing these fundamentals you may operate on a high level. These are the things “naturals” have taking care of but if they find themselves in a slump its hard for them to fix it because they have no control of them or even know what they are. This gives you an advantage because you will be in control of yourself. In fact you will be better equipped to read other people because you will have these basics on a conscious level so when you see them in a social situation you can understand a little bit about them which will help you read them in a interaction.

So lets go ahead and get these in a list not a one is more important than the other they are all of equal importance. With out one you are doomed from the get go!

1. Eye contact - We all know that we need to have strong eye contact .It conveys a high confidence while weak eye contact conveys a submissive and weak confidence. This is an easy fix go out everyday and on every interaction you are in play the silly eye contact game. This is where you will hold eye contact with everybody till they break first (coworkers, waitresses, etc..) this will slowly become internalized after a few weeks, while doing this you will get more comfortable with it and will get to notice lots of things about the person you are dealing with things like their posture, and demeanor.

2. Posture - Bring your posture to a conscious level by having frequent body checks. Imagine that you have a chain connected to your spine (your spine ends in the back of your lower head) and it pulls you up into the ceiling straitening your back, shoulders back, head up, eyes meeting every one Else’s.

3. Committing to the approach - I can not stress enough how important this is if you are going in then by all means go in introduce yourself or what ever you plan on saying. If you hesitate, hover; in any way you are increasing your chances of people blowing you out. It will show you do not have the confidence to go in and be accepted and will lend to you looking creepy.

4. Smiling - This is another one that can tremendously hurt you. A genuine (not forced) smile shows clearly that you are in the moment and enjoying yourself which in tern will make others feel comfortable and more at ease with you entering their world. You can internalize this by thinking positively about your life, and by helping out the people around you and looking for things to learn from them which will in tern make everyday that much more interesting, also by ignoring people faults and concentrating on their positives will help make everyday more fun.

5. Fun vocal tonality – This will help convey you are in a good mood and will help show along with smiling that you are in fact in a great mood and positive energy. Try using your banter voice, which is slightly higher register and more in your throat opposed to your seduction voice, which comes from the diaphragm. This will help disarm strangers and in turn help them relax around you.

6. Moving with purpose – One of the worst things you can do in a venue is stand around like you are waiting for some one to entertain you. If you are going to move pick an area and move, if you are going to dance then dance if you are going to sit and drink sit and drink. Make a decision and move if you cannot lead yourself no one will follow you. Know what you are doing when you do it and you need no ones permission.

Make sure these Ideas are internalized and revisit them any time you need there is a reason why athletes practice through out their careers just because they are basic and simple does not mean they may be looked over, most blow outs are caused when these are not demonstrated properly.
Take one at a time and bring them to a conscious level for a while it will take about 3 weeks for these to be internalized. The rewards of this are endless and will make you a very confident person.
